I’ve been using Instagram a lot for various clients lately. At first I had the idea that Instagram is only useful when you have images to share. While I do still think that is an important aspect of your Instagram profile and presence, my thoughts have somewhat evolved. I think that’s pretty normal too. Social media changes every day. You can’t be one sided either. Yes, you have to post your own photos, but you should also repost user photos and give credit to those who would potentially like your products and services. After all, your Instagram story is told through the photos you post, but also those who post about you.
Here’s how to be a better Instagram user and community member.
1. Reshare relevant posts
This is one great way to grow your presence and following on Instagram. By sharing other users’ photos you will be able to give credit to those who fit in with your community.
2. Share often
The key to growing your following is to share content on a regular basis. If you are posting awesome images that people love and can connect with, then you won’t have to worry about posting too often. I think 2-3 times a day is good, but if you can source more images then go for it.
3. Use hashtags
Hashtags are the only way to get found on Instagram. With that said, if you want to get found you need to use them. I like to use the same hashtags over and over again so I can build the most targeted following. Because the same people will search the same hashtag time and time again, it is the best way to start gaining recognition with the community you want to connect with.
4. Search hashtags
Like I said above, the only way to get found is through hashtags. This gives you the opportunity to connect with people who use the same hashtags as you do.
5. Comment on relevant posts
People want recognition. This is your time to give it to them. By commenting on posts you are telling people you appreciate them. This will likely lead them to respond on your posts and follow you. The more engagement you put out the better off you’ll be.
6. Respond to commenters
If you want people to continue to talk to you and comment on your posts you must respond to them. It’s crucial.
7. Reciprocate
This is probably the most important tip. You need to do unto others as others do unto you. You will see that Instagram is a great community and provides a ton of opportunity to grow, engage and connect with people who could become buyers. If someone likes your photos, go back and like theirs too. If someone comments, go and comment on their photos. You will see this works very well.
I spend 30-45 minutes per day on Instagram. All of these things I mention can be done in less time depending on how much time you have to spend. But the more time you dedicate to your Instagram presence the better results you’ll see. Remember to be targeted.
